Doctors Warn: 6 Dangerous Signs of Acid Reflux That Increase Esophageal Cancer Risk
Many people consider chest burning sensations as a minor issue, believing acid-reducing medication is sufficient. However, Dr. Huang Guowei, a digestive system specialist from Taipei Municipal Hospital's Yangming Branch, warns that chronic acid reflux not only affects quality of life but can also lead to esophageal narrowing, Barrett's esophagus, and increased cancer risk.
Dr. Huang explains that acid reflux occurs when stomach acid or food flows back into the esophagus, causing inflammation, typically due to lower esophageal sphincter dysfunction or inappropriate lifestyle habits. Common triggering factors include obesity, dietary behaviors, and smoking.
He notes that abdominal fat increases intra-abdominal pressure, making acid reflux easier. Fried foods, sweet foods, spicy dishes, coffee, alcohol, and chocolate can stimulate stomach acid secretion. Smoking relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, increasing reflux risk.
Dr. Huang warns against relying solely on medication and recommends monitoring six key warning signs that require immediate medical attention:
1. Persistent acid reflux lasting over two weeks without improvement
2. Difficult or painful swallowing
3. Continuous chest pain or discomfort
4. Blood in vomit or black stool
5. Unintentional weight loss or loss of appetite
6. Hoarseness, feeling of foreign object in throat, or chronic cough
He advises avoiding overeating, limiting trigger foods, wearing loose clothing, managing stress, and ensuring adequate rest to reduce acid reflux risks.
