Department of Transportation Orders Taxis to Install QR Codes for Real-Time Tracking to Prevent Crime
Soraphong Phaitoonphong, Director-General of the Department of Land Transport, revealed that to improve safety and oversight of public taxis, they are implementing a digital QR Code system linked to Thai ID to identify taxi drivers and track travel status in real-time. The goal is to build passenger confidence, reduce crime risks, and concretely elevate the Thai taxi system's image. Implementation began on February 2nd, with plans to install QR Codes on over 70,000 taxis by June. Passengers can scan the QR Code before boarding, which will display the driver's name, vehicle registration, and relevant training information, effectively preventing identity fraud. The system will feature three color-coded QR Code stickers with different functions, including personal verification, passenger feedback, and emergency reporting. The digital system also allows real-time location tracking and provides an option to share travel information with close contacts for added security.
