Structural Engineers Association Investigates Cause of Bang Phli Steel Dome Collapse
The Structural Engineers Association hypothesizes potential causes for the large steel dome structure collapse at the Metropolitan Electricity Authority Training and Skills Testing Center in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan Province. Professor Dr. Amorn Pimanmas, President of the Structural Engineers Association of Thailand, noted the collapsed structure consisted of circular steel columns, large steel trusses, and H-beam supports. The steel columns collapsed at their base, causing the entire steel truss and H-beam structure to fall to the ground. Preliminary investigations suggest three potential causes: 1) Determining the stage of collapse (during or after construction), 2) Possible structural failure starting from the columns due to weak connection points, and 3) Potential system instability from insufficient bracing and support. The association emphasizes the need to review construction plans, calculations, and engineering standards. The structure falls under controlled engineering requirements and must have licensed engineers responsible for design and construction supervision.
