European Union Officially Registers Geographical Indication for Ratchaburi Fragrant Coconut
The European Union has officially registered the Geographical Indication (GI) for 'Ratchaburi Fragrant Coconut', expanding trade opportunities to 27 countries. On February 21, 2024, Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Pherisvivatana revealed that the EU has formally registered the coconut as a Geographical Indication after Thailand's application in 2023. The EU is a key export market for fragrant coconuts, with annual export values exceeding 300 million baht. The GI protection will help prevent unauthorized product claims, increase importer confidence, and expand trade opportunities in member countries including the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Hungary, Czech Republic, Ireland, and Denmark. This registration enhances the image of high-quality Thai agricultural products and represents a significant step in elevating Thai agricultural goods to the international stage. It is the first GI product from Ratchaburi province to receive international protection and the fifth Thai GI registered in the European Union, following Indica Rice from Thung Kula Ronghai, Songkhla Rice, Doi Tung Coffee, and Doi Chang Coffee. According to 2025 data, Ratchaburi produces approximately 550 million fragrant coconuts, with domestic sales of 276 million baht and global exports exceeding 5.244 billion baht, clearly demonstrating the potential of Thai agricultural products in the global market.
