Editorial - Constitutional Referendum Results
The constitutional amendment referendum on February 8th reflected an overwhelming majority, with over 34 million voters participating and 30.38 million (89.0%) approving a new constitution drafting process. These numbers represent not just a victory for democratic processes, but a clear political signal that people want to change the fundamental rules to break out of long-standing conflict cycles. However, despite the referendum's positive results, important questions have emerged under the 'Anutin 2' government led by Bhumjaithai Party, which won the election decisively. The key concern is whether the new constitution will truly reflect the people's will, given the party's traditionally conservative stance and previous opposition to constitutional amendments. Political science academics warn that under existing political structures, Thai politics offers little genuine hope for change. There's a possibility that the post-election transition might merely change the government's appearance rather than its power structure. The most concrete solution unavoidably requires serious constitutional reform through an open, participatory process, which could take up to 18 months. If the new government chooses to delay or obstruct this process, the 30 million supportive votes could become meaningless, potentially triggering a new political crisis.
