Cornering the Issue - Moving Forward with Constitutional Amendment
On February 8th, beyond being an election day to select MPs who will choose the Prime Minister and lead the country, there is another important aspect: conducting a constitutional referendum. This is a direct vote asking citizens nationwide if they want a new constitution. The result will likely reflect what is already evident - that most people of the country agree that amendments are needed. Enough of a constitution not originating from the people, defining excessive independent organization powers that cannot be checked, and creating unstable governments that can be easily removed. A constitution claiming to combat corruption but instead generating widespread graft with no accountability. The emergence of a Senate selected from professional groups, despite Thailand lacking professional councils, has allowed established groups to infiltrate the Senate. If one wants to deny this Senate's purity, one must present evidence of financial flows and connections. Certainly, this is not easy, as the Constitutional Court has set conditions that this constitutional amendment must pass three referendums. This is a step of hope to create fair rules, a just society, and prevent people's power from being curtailed by extra-systemic forces - a step forward that will not allow anyone to tear it down again!
