Thailand Tightens Gun Licence Controls with Public Carry Ban

BANGKOK — On 19 February, the government announced stringent nationwide firearm controls, including a suspension of public carry permits and severe penalties for unauthorized gun possession. Caretaker Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul ordered authorities to strictly enforce firearm regulations and comprehensively review the current system. Key measures include: intensified background checks for firearm licence applicants, increased monitoring of existing licence holders, and a continued suspension of public carry permits. The government emphasized that carrying a firearm in public without reasonable cause is a criminal offense punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of 10,000 baht. Even individuals with possession licences are prohibited from carrying firearms in public, with exceptions only for urgent necessities. Local administrative officials are instructed to collaborate with community networks to enforce these new restrictions and enhance public safety.
