Deadline Set: Consumer Council and Industrial Standards Join 4 Platforms to Remove Dangerous Products
The Consumer Council, together with the Office of Industrial Product Standards (TISI), Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA), and Consumer Protection Office, met with representatives from four major e-commerce platforms - Shopee, Lazada, LINE Shopping, and TikTok - to launch an urgent measure to clear out high-risk products within 30 days. The initiative involves two key phases: 1. Short-term measures: Immediate screening and removal of high-risk products like hair dryers, power strips, and power banks without proper industrial certification or with fake certifications. 2. Long-term measures: Developing an automated data exchange system (API) to verify product standards before listing, with platforms like Shopee already testing the system and others planning implementation within 6 months. Official sources emphasized that this collaboration is crucial for consumer safety, especially after incidents like the electrocution death of a young girl, which highlighted the inadequacy of existing product monitoring methods.
