Thai Coffee Chains Reduce Default Sugar Content in Beverages as Part of Health Initiative
BANGKOK — For many Thais, a meal isn't complete without an extremely sweet iced coffee or tea. In response to growing health concerns, the government has launched an initiative where nine major coffee chains will reduce the default sugar content in their drinks by half. Health Department data reveals that Thais consume an average of 21 teaspoons of sugar daily, which is more than three times the World Health Organization's recommended limit. This high sugar intake significantly increases risks of obesity, diabetes, and other health problems. A survey found that a typical 22-ounce iced coffee contains nine teaspoons of sugar, while a 10-ounce bubble milk tea can have up to 12 teaspoons. The initiative aims to change consumer sugar consumption behavior, with officials noting that 45% of Thais aged 15 and older are obese, and 10% have diabetes. While some customers support the move, others are uncertain about how to order drinks at their preferred sweetness level. Each coffee chain can implement the sugar reduction differently, which may create some initial confusion.
