Sensational Discovery: Rarely Seen Tapir Found in Thai Nature, Believed Extinct
Wildlife researchers from the Pru-Halabala Wildlife Research Station have made a groundbreaking discovery after receiving reports of a rare tapir sighting. On January 25, 2024, a tapir was found in Bang Son Canal, Tak Bai District, Narathiwat Province, marking the first clear photographic identification in Thailand. Nattawut Yuenchon, the photographer, reported seeing the tapir floating near the canal's edge during twilight, approximately 3 meters long. After initial sightings and community interest, the animal swam away into the darkness. On January 26, 2024, the research team conducted a nighttime search and discovered another tapir, approximately 1.5 meters long, swimming away. According to the IUCN Red List, tapirs are classified as endangered, and in Thailand were previously believed to be extinct. The species is strictly protected under international conservation treaties.
