Prosecutor Calls for Negotiation of 1.7 Million Baht Compensation after Crane Accident
Prosecutors are negotiating compensation of approximately 1.7 million baht for a crane accident that collapsed on a train. On February 6, 2026, a special express train on the Bangkok Phiwat-Ubon Ratchathani route was crushed by a construction crane between Nong Nam Khun and Sikhio stations in Nakhon Ratchasima province, killing 30 passengers and injuring many.
One of the victims was Suphinna 'Pin' Sathabutr, 28 years old. The entire compensation amount was transferred to her father Samroeng, 64 years old. The deceased's 10-year-old son 'Korn' is currently living with his paternal family and uncle, as his father passed away when he was just one year old.
Buriram Province Governor Piya Picham contacted the grandfather about the compensation, resulting in only 200,000 baht being transferred to the child. The grandfather claimed the money was used to pay debts and funeral expenses. The incident has been heavily criticized online, questioning the appropriateness of the compensation distribution and government oversight.
The village headman noted discrepancies in the expense account, particularly the excessive funeral costs. The child's uncle expressed hope that the money could be used for his nephew's education. Social development officials have initiated mediation efforts to resolve the conflict and ensure the child's interests are protected.
