ASEAN Envoy Ends Myanmar Visit Without Meeting Suu Kyi
ASEAN envoy Teresa Lazaro concluded a two-day Myanmar visit without meeting detained former leader Aung San Su
ASEAN's special envoy to Myanmar, Philippine Assistant Foreign Secretary Teresa Lazaro, wrapped up a two-day mission without meeting Aung San Suu Kyi, the 81-year-old former civilian leader detained since the military's 2021 coup. The Philippines, serving as ASEAN chair, had made multiple requests for access to Suu Kyi, whose status remains a sticking point for the bloc, which has barred Myanmar's military leaders from summit meetings since the overthrow of her government.
Myanmar's Foreign Ministry stated that Lazaro discussed key issues with Foreign Minister Than Swe regarding the restoration of Myanmar's rights and role in ASEAN, without mentioning a meeting with Suu Kyi, who is confined to a residence in Naypyidaw. Philippine officials had sought a meeting in April and again in August, after Suu Kyi met with senior Myanmar Red Cross officials, but the requests were denied.
On October 28, Lazaro traveled to Shan State to monitor humanitarian aid projects for those displaced by civil war following the coup. Analysts note Myanmar has recently allowed Suu Kyi slightly more contact with the outside world, though still heavily restricted. On October 26, authorities revealed she received two books on soil and a sealed diplomatic document from Britain's King Charles III. On October 22, her son Kim Aris, based in the UK, was permitted a 20-minute phone call — their first verbal contact in over five years. Aris said his mother sounded relatively strong but expressed concern she is being used as a propaganda tool by her captors.
