Chiang Mai Battles Graffiti On Underground Power Boxes
Chiang Mai's electricity authority cleaned over 200 graffiti-vandalized power boxes along the city moat and Tha Phae Road, offering rewards for information on offenders who face fines up to 100,000 baht and prison time.
Chiang Mai's Provincial Electricity Authority has mobilized staff to clean over 200 underground electrical control boxes that encircle the city moat and line Tha Phae Road, which have been repeatedly vandalized by graffiti artists. The boxes, part of Chiang Mai's transformation into a city with underground power lines, have been defaced with spray paint and line drawings that damage the city's appearance and undermine its tourism image.
Authority officials expressed frustration with the ongoing vandalism, noting that today's cleanup was completed but additional incidents are expected. The PEA has announced a reward program for information leading to arrests. Anyone with tips can contact the Provincial Electricity Authority at 053-206291 or 241816.
Vandalism of electrical control boxes is a serious offense. Offenders face fines ranging from 10,000 to 100,000 baht, imprisonment of six months to two years, or both. The PEA is designated as the injured party and will pursue prosecution. Rewards for informants will be paid from fines collected by the authority.
