1h ago Khaosod

A heartbreaking scene unfolded as three water gate construction workers descended to survey an excavated trench when soil suddenly collapsed and buried two of them fatally, while one survived with critical injuries.

At 4:00 PM on May 20, 2025, Deputy Commander Sompon Nitiphakdi of Thungsong Police Station in Nakhon Si Thammarat, along with investigation officers, doctors from Thungsong Hospital, and personnel from Siam Ruam Jai Por In Foundation, arrived to investigate the soil collapse at the Khuan Krot water gate construction project in Ban Nong Saeng, Khuan Krot Subdistrict, Thungsong District. Upon arrival, they found excavators and workers, with rescue units assisting in removing soil from the two victims' bodies. The remains were brought to the surface for autopsy. The deceased were identified as Watit, 21 years old, and Chulanthorn, 22 years old. Family members and relatives were present, their cries echoing throughout the site. The injured worker was transported to Thungsong Hospital earlier.

Investigation revealed that both victims were water gate construction workers. While machinery was operating, they and a coworker walked along an excavated trench to survey the pipe outlet area. A soil collapse occurred, burying both workers fatally, while their colleague survived but sustained severe injuries.

Authorities transported the victims to the hospital and initiated legal proceedings. The remains will be released to their families for religious rites.

Editorial – Genuine Intent on Constitution Reform

Bhumjaithai Party submitted the first constitutional amendment draft following public referendum support for reform, proposing a 100-member drafting assembly and lowering Senate approval thresholds to enable compromise. The opposition plans

1h ago Khaosod

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, as Bhumjaithai Party leader, submitted a constitutional amendment draft under Article 256 to the Parliamentary Speaker alongside party MPs. The party chief stated this aligns with the party's commitment to hearing public voices and concerns about constitution reform. Following the referendum results showing public desire for amendments, Bhumjaithai responded by becoming the first party to submit a constitutional amendment draft. Anutin confirmed the party has clearly demonstrated its sincere commitment to constitutional reform, contradicting claims of insincerity. The Bhumjaithai draft proposes a 100-member Constitutional Drafting Assembly comprising 23 experts selected through nationwide recruitment and 77 other members, with 300 reserves. For third-reading approval, it suggests lowering the Senate threshold from one-third to one-quarter to enable compromise, while maintaining Chapters 1 and 2 unchanged regarding the form of government and monarchy. Opposition bloc leaders confirmed they will submit a competing draft within a week, emphasizing three principles: maximum public participation, preventing monopolization of the constitution-making process, and refusing special privileges or enhanced Senate powers over approval. This reform effort starts fresh following the previous parliamentary process, which passed first reading but faced committee-level complications when the majority sought to remove the one-third Senate approval requirement, replacing it with simple majority vote from both chambers—a change that angered the Senate and ultimately led to the dissolution and new elections. The success of the new constitution hinges significantly on Senate approval votes, especially given the widely-known favorable relationship between Bhumjaithai, government leadership, and the Senate majority. Therefore, Anutin's decision to have Bhumjaithai submit the draft first is hoped to demonstrate genuine and serious commitment to completing the new constitutional process.

Throwing in the Towel – Disappointed but Understanding: Thailand Loses Free World Cup Broadcast

Thailand has abandoned plans to secure free World Cup broadcasts after licensing fees exceeded 1.7 billion baht, with the government unable to justify the massive spending during economic hardship despite initial promises to provide free ac

1h ago Khaosod

Just one week after the government signaled that 'Thai people must get free World Cup access,' the government's stance has shifted from full acceleration to reverse. The main reason remains the licensing fees, which are too high for the government to explain to the public. While starting at 1.3 billion baht, the total with taxes and other expenses climbs to over 1.7 billion baht. Given Thailand's fragile economy, spending such a massive amount on fleeting entertainment lacks logical justification. This World Cup's business conditions are also less favorable than previous tournaments. The late time zone makes it difficult for Thai viewers, reducing advertising and marketing event opportunities, and private sponsors haven't rushed in as sponsors like before. Without private sector support, the government struggles to find funding. Another issue is the government's overly casual communication, particularly the Prime Minister's immediate 'it must be free' response when asked if Thai people would watch for free. While football fans appreciated the answer, it strategically 'showed their hand' to licensing holders, revealing that the Thai government 'really wants this,' weakening their negotiating position. Ultimately, prices climbed so high that the government began hesitating, as the numbers simply don't add up financially. Meanwhile, public criticism grew, with voices arguing that 1.7 billion baht invested in Thai youth football development and regional league support could deliver greater long-term benefits. The government now faces a difficult choice between 'popularity points' and 'value for money.' On one hand, the World Cup brings joy to viewers, but on the other, it represents an enormous sum of money that must be justified to society. Should the government ultimately abandon the World Cup broadcasting plan, it could cost Prime Minister Anutin some face. However, during a period of serious economic hardship, most football fans, while potentially disappointed, would likely understand and accept the reasoning.

Meet the 'Cheese Witch': Fortune Teller Who Claims to Predict the Future Using Cheese

A Chicago-based fortune teller known as the "Cheese Witch" reads people's futures by analyzing the patterns and textures of cheese, reviving an ancient divination practice called Tyromancy that dates back to medieval times.

1h ago Khaosod

Chicago-based Jane Billok, who calls herself the 'Cheese Witch,' is gaining attention for her unconventional fortune-telling method. Instead of tarot cards, tea leaves, or palm lines, she uses cheese as a tool to read the future. Billok's connection to cheese began in childhood after visiting a cheese aging room with her parents. During the COVID-19 pandemic, her travel writing work halted, prompting her to search online for unusual food-based divination methods. She discovered 'Tyromancy'—the practice of divination through cheese—which became a small obsession. With her existing tarot reading background, she adapted tarot interpretation principles to analyze patterns, textures, and cracks on cheese. Tyromancy dates back to the 2nd century and was popular in medieval England, used to determine criminals' guilt and predict seasonal agricultural yields. The practice resembles coffee or tea leaf reading, where the diviner interprets stories from shapes, patterns, and surfaces on food. Billok focuses solely on the cheese until messages 'pop into her head' as if a voice tells her what to say. She offers both in-person and online readings, typically using four cheese pieces per session—three representing past, present, and future, with the fourth addressing specific questions. Different cheeses provide different 'messages': blue cheese tends to be detailed and interpretable in multiple ways, while cheddar or pre-sliced cheese yields more direct and clear messages. Billok emphasizes that cheese price doesn't affect accuracy; both inexpensive and premium aged cave-aged cheese work equally as 'spiritual mediums.' Beyond cheese, she also reads tarot, oracle cards, runes, and other foods and beverages.

Mind Sakal Achieves More Than a Dream, Wins World Championship – Calls for Snooker to be Freed from Gambling Laws

Eighteen-year-old Thai snooker champion Mind Sakal won the world title in May, becoming the first female player globally to claim both senior and youth world championships in the same year. She called for Thailand to remove snooker from gam

1h ago Khaosod

Mind Sakal Panchaya Channa Noi, an 18-year-old Thai snooker player and the latest women's world snooker champion who also holds back-to-back youth women's world titles, returned to Thailand on May 20 at Suvarnabhumi Airport. She was warmly welcomed by Big Hong Sunthon Charumont, chairman of the Thai Billiards Sports Association, along with family and fans.

Mind Sakal is the third Thai female snooker player to achieve world champion status, following Minky Saraburi and Blade Sriracha. She is notably the first female snooker player globally to win both senior and youth world championships in the same year. Her world title victory qualifies her to compete professionally for two seasons and participate in the 2026 Champions of Champions tournament, earning a championship prize of 13,000 pounds, approximately 559,000 baht.

When asked about her achievement, Mind Sakal said she never expected to win the senior world championship before the competition. She aimed simply to enjoy playing and perform her best. Defeating reigning Chinese champion Bi You Lu starting from the semi-final round, she felt she had nothing to lose since she was already the underdog. Playing to her full potential, she acknowledged feeling more thrilled about becoming world champion than she had ever dreamed possible at just 18 years old. She noted that competing in professional world snooker is a dream for many athletes in this sport, and the rapid achievement is unexpected for her. She committed to intensive training to deliver strong results.

Mind expressed gratitude to sponsors, coaches, legendary player Blade Sriracha for mentorship, Thai fans for their support, and her parents for never pressuring her during competition. She vowed to bring home a second championship for Thailand next year.

Mind also remarked that during her competition in China, she observed substantial investment in snooker development and wished to appeal to relevant authorities to free snooker from its association with gambling.

Sunthon Charumont congratulated Mind on achieving two championships simultaneously, highlighting her excellent training statistics and daily century breaks, with two achieved during the China competition. Jason Ferguson, president of the World Billiards Federation, even publicly praised her performance. Moving forward, Mind will compete professionally for two years at an annual cost of 2 million baht, which currently faces budget shortfalls. Charumont appealed for financial support, particularly from Chada Thai Saet, an Uthai Thani MP and fellow hometown resident of Mind.

The billiards association chairman also addressed snooker's status under Thailand's 1935 Gambling Act. He noted that he and many others have spent over 20 years pushing to remove snooker from this legislation and have continuously consulted relevant agencies. While snooker is now widespread globally, Thailand remains the only country where snooker is classified as a gambling sport. He appealed to Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who holds authority over this matter, to unlock snooker from these restrictions.

PTT Pushes Ahead with Exploration, Production, and Trading Operations to Support Second-Half Profits

PTT plans to boost second-half profits through exploration, production, and trading operations, with trading expected to benefit from market volatility and high global oil prices supporting upstream operations.

2h ago Khaosod

PTT President and CEO Kongkrapan Intrajang revealed that the company's business plans for the rest of the year will be driven primarily by exploration and production (E&P) and trading (Trading) operations. The trading business, in particular, stands to benefit significantly from market volatility, which increases product flow circulation. The company is also aggressively pursuing new customers. The sustained high oil prices on global markets represent a direct positive factor for upstream operations like E&P. Kongkrapan acknowledged that plans to find refining and petrochemical business partners may move more slowly due to global volatility and the current chaotic state of the refining sector, which is still under discussion. "Partnership plans must proceed more carefully because global rules have changed, so surpluses may become shortages and shortages may become more acute, requiring us to consider matters much more carefully," he said. For the first quarter of 2025, PTT reported net profit of 25,738 million baht, up 2,423 million baht or 10.4% year-on-year. The company managed the Middle East tensions by leveraging its international trading network with offices worldwide, allowing rapid diversification of crude oil supplies from various sources. The company's refineries have invested over 111,000 million baht over the past five years, providing machinery reliability and flexibility to handle crude from multiple sources. PTT established the PTT Incident Command System (PTT ICS) to manage business continuity and energy security nationwide. Over two months from March to April, the company's refineries operated at over 100% capacity under safety standards. Petrochemical operations ran at full capacity to ensure supply chain security for plastic and chemical customers. The company adjusted natural gas procurement to continuously supply power plants and industry, securing spot LNG from non-Middle Eastern suppliers and rescheduling maintenance to maximize gas separation plant output. PTT managed financial liquidity to support national energy security, increasing available liquidity by 230,000 million baht as global oil prices surged.

Suphajee Unconcerned Over Constitutional Court Petition Against 400-Billion-Baht Borrowing Decree; Government Accelerates Economic Support, Touts Q4 GDP Growth of 2.5%

Deputy PM Suphajee dismissed constitutional court concerns over the 400-billion-baht borrowing decree, saying the government is implementing economic support measures targeting 2.5% Q4 GDP growth. The Commerce Ministry is distributing 100-b

2h ago Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Suphajee Sutthipanthawong stated on May 20 at Government House that she has no concerns about the Constitutional Court's acceptance of the opposition's petition challenging the 400-billion-baht borrowing decree (Royal Decree for Borrowing).

She explained that the government knows what it is doing because it understands the economic crisis already underway. While GDP may appear strong currently, Q4 of last year was projected at only 0.3 percent. The government is implementing various quick-win measures, and although the Commerce Ministry is a small cog, it is pushing hard to boost GDP growth to 2.5 percent in Q4, serving as wind beneath the economy's wings. January and February saw exceptional export performance.

Q1, which was affected by the energy crisis, still showed upward GDP momentum into March, though not yet fully felt. However, if efforts are halted, problems will return, and the economy cannot be revived as before.

Suphajee emphasized that the Commerce Ministry works proactively before crises occur, as addressing them afterward requires substantial budgets due to damage to citizens and businesses. Therefore, the ministry aims to prevent problems from arising.

Regarding response to the Thai Help Thai project, Suphajee noted that feedback has been positive, with the ministry conducting continuous satisfaction surveys. All departments within the Commerce Ministry are working in integration due to the project's origin in the oil crisis and its impact on living costs. The initiative seeks to provide affordable, accessible essential consumer goods as alternatives for citizens.

On June 4, coupons worth 100 baht will be distributed to shoppers to reduce prices and ease the burden on both consumers and businesses, while promoting SME and community products to grow and reach larger markets.

Fatal Bus-Train Crash Victim "Rose" Returned to Ubon Ratchathani

A Kasetsart University graduate was killed in a train-bus crash over the weekend; her family brought her body back to Ubon Ratchathani for funeral rites and is calling for stricter public transport safety measures.

2h ago Khaosod

UBON RATCHATHANI — On May 20, 2026, the family of "Rose," a woman killed in Saturday's catastrophic collision between a train and a public bus, has brought her body back to her hometown in Ubon Ratchathani Province for funeral rites, amid desperate calls from her family for stricter public transport passenger safety.

A funeral service was held at Wat Suan Sawan in Phibun Sub-district, Phibun Mangsahan District, Ubon Ratchathani Province, on Wednesday, for "Rose" Wiparak Phaophuree, a recent graduate of Kasetsart University's Faculty of Humanities, who died in the tragic train-bus crash on Saturday. Condolence wreaths from multiple organizations were sent to pay respects, and neighbors gathered at the temple to assist the grieving family with funeral arrangements amid a deeply somber atmosphere.

The religious rites will span three days. Ubon Ratchathani Governor Narong Thepsena and local authorities are scheduled to host the first night of the three-day Buddhist funeral prayers. The cremation ceremony will take place on May 23.

The victim's mother called for improvements in passenger safety measures on public buses, questioning why the driver would drive onto railway tracks and stop across them with no regard for safety. She emphasized that passengers place their lives entirely in the hands of drivers and called for better safeguards.

Meanwhile, the victim's aunt shared that her niece routinely commuted using a combination of motorbikes, buses, and taxis. The family was able to immediately confirm she was on the ill-fated bus because she had paid her fare via mobile banking and posted a social media story stating she was on the bus.

The victim's aunt expressed that one minute of carelessness destroyed decades of her niece's future, along with seven others. She emphasized that if the driver had sacrificed just one minute to wait, eight lives would not have been lost.

National Security Council Approves Energy Ministry's Jet Fuel Exports to Vietnam and Philippines, with Option to Halt if Needed

Thailand's National Security Council approved exporting Jet A-1 aviation fuel to Vietnam and the Philippines while retaining the ability to halt shipments if domestic supplies become critical.

2h ago Khaosod

At 4:40 p.m. on May 20, 2025, at Government House, Chatrachai Bangchad, Secretary-General of the National Security Council, announced the results of the council's third meeting of 2025. The meeting considered two main issues: measures for exporting fuel abroad and the extension of registration deadlines for stateless persons. Previously, the council had halted fuel exports except to Myanmar and Laos. The Energy Ministry proposed allowing exports of Jet A-1 aviation fuel to Vietnam and the Philippines, which the council approved. The meeting determined that such exports would not affect Thailand's domestic fuel supply and would help reduce excess fuel stock. The Energy Ministry retains authority to suspend exports if shortages or urgent needs arise. Additionally, the council approved extending the deadline for registering stateless persons to determine their status under nationality resolution guidelines, effective from June 30, 2025, to June 30, 2026, with applications submitted at district offices. This represents a continuation of cabinet directives since October 29, 2024, targeting approximately 480,000 stateless persons. The Ministry of Interior has processed over 100,000 cases in the past year. The extension aims to meet registration targets, with the Department of Local Administration tasked with verifying those who fail to report or disappear from the system. The council also acknowledged border trade control measures, which the Defense Ministry has formalized into a proclamation approved by the cabinet, establishing controls in border areas of Myanmar and Cambodia to regulate exported goods and quantities.

Khao Khiao Open Zoo Celebrates Success as White-Necked Storks Hatch Chicks in the Wild Again

2h ago Khaosod

Khao Khiao Open Zoo celebrates a major wildlife conservation breakthrough as white-necked storks, a critically endangered species, have successfully nested, laid eggs, and hatched chicks in the wild once again at Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary. Zoo Director Norngwit Chadchoy announced this significant achievement for Thailand's wildlife conservation efforts, noting that the white-necked stork—a rare member of the heron family facing critical extinction risk—has successfully reproduced in its natural habitat, marking another crucial step in restoring endangered wildlife populations to nature sustainably.

This success resulted from collaboration between Khao Khiao Open Zoo staff and conservation agencies who carefully nurtured and prepared the white-necked storks from their enclosures before releasing them into the wild to adapt and live naturally. From their initial incubation and close monitoring to the birds now forming their own families in the forest, this achievement reflects the hope and success of Thai wildlife conservation efforts—not only increasing the population of rare species but also maintaining ecosystem balance and biodiversity.

Director Norngwit stated that this success proves "effort is never wasted" and serves as important motivation for all conservation officers working tirelessly to protect endangered wildlife and ensure they can continue to flourish in nature. Khao Khiao Open Zoo remains committed to conservation and breeding programs for rare wildlife, while simultaneously raising public awareness about the importance of preserving natural resources and passing on forests and biodiversity to future generations.
