Dr. Jesda Bunyavongvirojn, Deputy Director of Primary Care Services at Maha Sarakham Hospital, warns against four habits within 30 minutes of waking to prevent morning blood pressure spikes.

People often start their mornings differently—some immediately reach for their phones, others head to the kitchen for coffee, some rush to exercise, and some skip the bathroom to measure blood pressure first. However, morning is when the body transitions from sleep mode to wakefulness. The nervous system activates more intensely, heart rate increases slightly, and blood pressure naturally rises from nighttime levels.

For those with hypertension or attempting accurate blood pressure readings, Dr. Jesda recommends avoiding multiple stimulants simultaneously, especially during the first 30 minutes after waking.

**The Four Things to Avoid:**

**1. Don't rush to drink strong coffee immediately, especially before measuring blood pressure.** While hypertension patients are not banned from coffee, caffeine can temporarily increase pulse and blood pressure in some people, particularly those sensitive to it. If you drink coffee before measuring, the reading may be higher than your actual resting blood pressure. If you measure blood pressure each morning, the recommended routine is: wake → use bathroom → rest 5 minutes → measure blood pressure → then drink coffee. Guidelines recommend avoiding caffeine for about 30 minutes before measurement.

**2. Don't measure blood pressure while experiencing bladder fullness.** Many people don't realize that a full bladder can interfere with blood pressure readings. The guideline recommends using the bathroom first, then resting and measuring. Imagine someone who has slept 7-8 hours, desperately needs the bathroom, but forces themselves to sit and measure blood pressure—the stress and discomfort will elevate readings.

**3. Don't engage in intense physical activity immediately after waking, especially before measuring.** Exercise in the morning is not bad—regular activity is crucial for long-term blood pressure control. However, during exercise, the heart must pump more blood, so pulse and blood pressure naturally increase temporarily. If you measure immediately after running, cycling, or lifting weights, the reading will be higher than your resting value. Guidelines recommend avoiding exercise for about 30 minutes before measurement.

The goal of morning measurement is to capture blood pressure when your body is at rest and to maintain consistent measurement methods, rather than measuring within 30 seconds of waking.
