German Football Legend Lukas Podolski Announces Retirement at Age 40
German striker Lukas Podolski retires at 40 after 23 years, capping his career by helping Polish club Gornik Zabrze win the league cup while becoming a club owner.
Lukas Podolski, a legendary striker for the German national team, has officially announced his retirement at age 40, bringing an end to a 23-year football career. Podolski began his professional journey by joining Cologne's senior squad in 2003, before moving on to play for Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Galatasaray, Vissel Kobe, and Antalyaspor, eventually joining Gornik Zabrze in Poland's league from 2021 onwards. This season, Podolski helped Gornik win the Polish Cup, the club's first major trophy in 38 years, and he has also purchased a significant stake in the club, becoming a club owner at age 40. During his time with the German national team from 2004-2017, Podolski earned 130 caps and scored 49 goals, playing a crucial role in Germany's 2014 FIFA World Cup victory. A statement posted by Gornik on Instagram read: "Poldi is ending a career full of championships. He has become the owner of Gornik Zabrze football club. Thank you for everything and best wishes for your new role."
