On May 17, 2026, mourners gathered at the Asok-Phetchburi railway crossing where a train struck a bus, killing eight people. White flowers, garlands, and drinks were placed around the burned-out wreckage as tributes to the victims. Traffic conditions showed some private vehicles parked on the tracks while waiting at red lights, though most vehicles properly positioned themselves behind the yellow safety line, especially when trains approached. Barriers and warning signals remained functional. Thanongsakdi Meestrap, a 42-year-old motorcycle taxi driver at the scene, explained that this intersection is frequently used by drivers in a hurry, resulting in regular collisions and barrier damage—approximately one incident per month. He also noted incidents where buses parked on the tracks had their roofs struck by lowering barriers. Deeply saddened by the tragedy, he expressed sympathy for passengers who were unaware of danger, noting they had little chance to escape. While believing existing laws were strict, he appealed for greater public cooperation in slowing down when trains approach and called for stricter enforcement by authorities.
