Southern Thailand Unrest Escalates With Bombings, Shootings
5d ago Khaosod

Violence has flared again in Thailand's southern border provinces with a series of escalating attacks. The unrest began with a bombing in Thung Yang Daeng district, Pattani, injuring civilians and children. This was followed by an ambush shooting that killed a government official in Yarang district, Pattani, and arson attacks by armed groups disguised in military uniforms in Yala's Bannang Sata district.

Late on June 28, coordinated groups raided three PT petrol stations in Yala's Muang district, Sai Buri district, and Yala Hing district in Pattani, firing warning shots at station employees before setting explosives and fires. Most recently on June 29, a roadside tunnel bombing in Tak Bai district, Narathiwat, left two Malaysian tourists injured.

These incidents prompted the Permanent Secretary of Interior, the Public Administration Department Director-General, and Region 4 Commander to inspect affected areas. They ordered maximum security measures 24 hours a day and expedited efforts to apprehend perpetrators for prosecution while requesting public cooperation in providing tips.

The National Security Council Secretary-General confirmed the three petrol station bombings were linked to the southern insurgency, noting operational similarities to previous attacks on fuel facilities. The recurring violence raises questions about the government's progress in peace negotiations to resolve the southern conflict.

Compounding the security crisis is the shooting of Malichon Leewamoh, a Narathiwat MP from the Pracharaj Party, which has undermined public confidence and justice in the region. The government must pursue justice thoroughly, including investigating those behind the attack, as case dismissals could severely damage public trust in the state and reduce community cooperation in long-term peacebuilding.

Regarding the southern insurgency, the government must accelerate peace dialogue as promised. The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Malaysia on July 9-10, 2026, where Malaysia will facilitate discussions aimed at producing more concrete solutions to the southern border conflict.

Silicon Valley Founders Launch SV Academy for AI Training in Thailand

Three Silicon Valley tech veterans have launched SV Academy in Thailand to train youth and businesses in AI and software development, aiming to close the skills gap and prepare the country for rapid technological transformation.

Silicon Valley Founders Launch SV Academy for AI Training in Thailand
5d ago Khaosod

Three experienced founders from leading Silicon Valley technology companies have launched SV Academy, a skills development institute for artificial intelligence and software development training aimed at Thai youth, entrepreneurs, and businesses. The academy seeks to strengthen the potential of Thai personnel from youth level through entrepreneurs and business sectors to support the digital economy transformation and AI applications reshaping work across all industries.

The institute was founded by three professionals with experience in Silicon Valley's technology ecosystem: Prom Paladechpong, an innovative educator and assistant director of development and innovation at Loei Learn School; Krairat Myreen, a former senior engineer who worked with Amazon, Databricks, Uniswap, and Magic Eden; and Chalee Pisurachai, a technical infrastructure specialist with experience at Meta, Wing (part of Google X), and Robinhood Markets. Loei Learn School serves as the first partner in piloting the curriculum in Thailand.

Prom Paladechpong stated that AI is no longer just a tool for developers but is becoming a fundamental skill for people of all ages. He emphasized the need to design learning that helps students understand both application, product design, and user experience to apply technology in practice. SV Academy will bridge knowledge from Silicon Valley with Thailand's educational context.

Krairat Myreen noted that he witnessed firsthand how startups in Silicon Valley use AI to reduce time-to-market by five times and increase work efficiency by twenty times. However, employees unable to adapt quickly face dismissal. Previously, most businesses relied on renting ready-made software with monthly subscriptions and forced teams to adapt to those programs. AI has changed this dynamic—today applications solving specific business needs can be built in days, with full ownership and control. This is the skill SV Academy will teach to prepare for this transformation. "SV Academy's mission is to close the gap between Silicon Valley and Thailand until no gap remains," he said.

Chalee Pisurachai noted that in an era where AI makes knowledge access easier, the critical skill is applying that knowledge to create practical results. SV Academy will share system design and software infrastructure development knowledge from experience working with global technology organizations, helping Thai organizations develop efficient, secure software supporting future business expansion.

SV Academy has designed curricula including SV Academy Junior for youth ages 10-15 to develop app creation and basic AI skills, and SV Academy for Entrepreneurs and Business Owners focusing on applying AI to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and create innovation without requiring prior programming experience.

Thai Airways Stewardess Arrested In Melbourne With 1kg Heroin

Thai Airways flight attendant arrested at Melbourne Airport with 1 kilogram of heroin in her luggage, prompting Thai and Australian authorities to investigate the smuggling operation and its origins.

Thai Airways Stewardess Arrested In Melbourne With 1kg Heroin
5d ago Khaosod

Australian police arrested a Thai Airways flight attendant at Melbourne Airport after discovering 1 kilogram of heroin in her luggage, a major story in both Australia and Thailand. The arrest is particularly shocking because the suspect works as an airline employee—a profession that should know better and be well-aware that border controls forbid smuggling serious contraband. Australia is known for strict customs enforcement against drugs, contraband items that could harm crops or animals, and disease prevention. Thai authorities must continue investigating the circumstances of this case. Australian police have coordinated with Thailand's Office of Narcotics Control Board to trace the origin of the drugs and identify anyone else involved. Thai authorities must conduct a thorough investigation to find the source of this drug shipment. Thai law enforcement agencies are under intense public scrutiny to determine whether the flight attendant was directly involved in a smuggling operation or was deceived into transporting the drugs for payment. Critically, Thailand must trace where these drugs came from, shut down trafficking channels, and prevent narcotics from leaving the country to other nations. This is not merely about national reputation or image—it directly affects Thai citizens and Thai businesses. If Thailand becomes known as a source of drug trafficking, other countries will view Thai nationals with suspicion, damaging travel and commerce. Thai Airways itself must strengthen measures to prevent employees from committing crimes. The damage is severe. Thailand will become a target for drug enforcement agencies worldwide, raising uncomfortable questions about how heroin can leave Thailand so easily yet be caught by strict Australian border controls. Deputy Prime Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, the transport minister, indicated that while past efforts focused on explosive detection, future measures must prioritize drug interdiction. He directed Thai Airways management, Airports of Thailand (AOT), and civil aviation authorities to coordinate on the issue. Naturally, when a major drug smuggling story breaks, all agencies must respond. However, they must also be careful not to create excessive delays that harm tourism, which depends on speed and convenience.

Political Rumor: Rift Between Two Senior Officials?

Political observers are monitoring unconfirmed reports of tensions between two senior Interior Ministry officials, though key figures have denied claims of party fracture or serious conflict.

Political Rumor: Rift Between Two Senior Officials?
5d ago Khaosod

Political observers are closely monitoring reports of alleged tensions between two key figures within the Interior Ministry, tensions reportedly stemming from subordinates and associates working across factional lines. Virot Lukkhanaadisorn has hypothesized, based on rumors and behavior patterns discussed in political circles, that such conflicts could escalate to leadership level, drawing a parallel to past tensions between senior figures where subordinate disputes became top-level problems. Within any political party containing multiple prominent figures with their own networks and administrative power bases, differing viewpoints are inevitable. However, differing political views do not necessarily equate to outright conflict. In response, senior figures Chaiyachon Chidchob, Songsak Thongsri, and Pipat Ratchakij have uniformly denied the reports, maintaining that political disagreement exists but does not represent party fracture. As party leaders, their denials appear designed to quash rumors and maintain party unity, since allowing society to believe rumors as fact would undermine public confidence and threaten government stability. Thai political history shows some rumors remain baseless while others eventually prove true, making it premature to make definitive conclusions now. The alleged conflict between the two figures currently lacks clear verification and remains at the level of rumor and observation. What to watch going forward is the Pheu Thai government's actual performance: if it proceeds normally without major personnel reshuffles, no signs of factional division, and no mutual attacks, the rumors will amount to mere ripples. However, if movements and stirrings from the two sides' inner circles increase, the rumors may have real foundation. Ultimately, time will be the arbiter of whether the "two figures" controversy is genuine or merely political interpretation run wild.

Black-Chin Barb Burgers Teach Job Skills to Drug Users
5d ago Khaosod

Samut Songkhram Provincial Administrative Organization held a rehabilitation and skills development program for drug users on June 30, 2025, at Bang Kaew Subdistrict Municipal Hall in Muang District. Jetada Yanprapassiri, the organization's governor, presided over the opening of the fiscal year 2025 program aimed at helping drug users and addicts live normal lives in society while combating drug spread in the area.

The training session brought together 70 participants—including current and former users, at-risk groups, and community leaders from Bang Kaew and Nang Takiean subdistricts. Participants received drug treatment education from Bang Kaew Health Promotion Hospital staff, along with practical vocational training in basic air conditioning maintenance by Piya Sangmuang and electrical and water system basics by provincial engineering officials.

The program's highlight was "black-chin barb fish burger making," which transforms an invasive species threatening the area into a value-added product. The process involves filleting the fish, blending the meat with seasonings, coating it in breadcrumbs, and deep-frying until golden. The patties are then assembled on buns with fresh vegetables, tomato sauce, and topped with another bun layer, creating delicious hamburgers that engaged participants enthusiastically.

Governor Jetada stated that the province recognizes the urgency of addressing drug problems and has signed a memorandum of understanding with government agencies, health departments, provincial police, and community leaders to guide users into treatment. The organization's key policy focuses on supporting treated individuals with vocational training to generate income and prevent relapse into drug use, representing a sustainable approach to returning quality citizens to society and strengthening communities.

Wife Exposes Husband's Affair With Staff Member
5d ago Khaosod

On June 9, a disturbance occurred outside an educational institution in Taiyang, Guangdong Province, China when a woman publicly exposed an alleged inappropriate relationship between her husband and a female staff member at the institution.

The woman, accompanied by family and friends, displayed large banners outside the institution and distributed leaflets to students and passersby. The materials alleged her husband was engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a female staff member and attached chat conversations as evidence. She urged anyone with additional information to come forward and also accused the staff member of corruption.

On June 11, the institution issued a statement clarifying that the accused employee had been hired in August 2024 and held a general staff position, not a department head role as circulated online. The institution stated the employee submitted her resignation on May 25 due to health issues and officially left on May 29. Regarding corruption allegations related to procurement processes, the institution established a special committee to investigate.

On June 13, the institution issued an additional statement indicating it had commissioned an audit office to review budget expenditures and procurement procedures during the employee's tenure, but found no evidence of abuse of authority or involvement in any misconduct. However, the institution condemned behavior that violated moral standards and social peace, announcing the revocation of various awards and honors the employee had received during her employment.
