Suspect in White House Shooting Had Prior Arrest, Was Sent for Psychiatric Care
A 21-year-old man opened fire at a White House checkpoint, wounding one civilian before being shot and killed by Secret Service officers; he had previously attempted to breach the compound in July and received psychiatric care.
The U.S. Secret Service reported that the suspect approached a checkpoint around 6:00 p.m., pulled a weapon from his bag, and opened fire on officers. Officers returned fire, wounding the suspect, who was transported to a hospital and died later. One civilian was shot, though it remains unclear whether from the suspect's initial volley or officers' return fire. No officers were injured. President Donald Trump, who was at the White House during the incident, was unharmed. The White House was immediately secured and the lockdown was lifted at 7:00 p.m. Sources revealed to CBS News that the deceased suspect was identified as 21-year-old Nasir Best, who had been arrested by the Secret Service in July 2025 after attempting to breach the White House and was sent to a psychiatric hospital for mental health treatment.
