Tourists have raised concerns over marine tour safety near Koh Larn after a viral social media post described a diving trip caught in rough seas and strong winds, with passengers allegedly left without adequate assistance during a sudden storm.

A TikTok user shared her experience from a join-trip snorkelling tour near Pattaya on 4 May, saying tourists were allowed into the water despite worsening weather conditions and received no warning about an approaching storm.

According to the woman, staff later announced that a storm was approaching, but while nearby tour boats quickly pulled tourists from the sea, her group was allegedly left floating in rough waters as waves intensified and the boat rocked violently.

She claimed several tourists struggled to swim back to the boat after flotation devices drifted away, while her sister was told by a jet ski operator to hold onto a buoy despite strong waves repeatedly pulling her underwater.

The woman said she and her boyfriend were eventually rescued by another boat and described the incident as a "life-or-death moment."

The post sparked criticism online, with some users claiming they were on the same trip and alleging there were too few staff members to assist tourists during the emergency.

The tourist called on marine tour operators to improve safety measures, including better weather warnings and faster emergency response. No injuries or deaths were reported.

A speedboat used to transport tourists to Koh Thalu caught fire in Bang Saphan Noi district on 20 May, leaving the vessel heavily damaged and its driver injured. According to local sources, the two-engine speedboat belonged to a tour company operating trips from the mainland to Koh Thalu. The boat, which had been in service for around seven to eight years, had reportedly experienced engine problems and had recently undergone repairs. The incident occurred while the boat was parked near the shoreline due to shallow water conditions preventing it from docking at the pier as usual. Sources said the driver was preparing the vessel to pick up tourists when a loud explosion-like sound was heard as the engine was started, before flames rapidly engulfed the boat. The driver reportedly suffered burns to his arms and body while attempting to use onboard fire extinguishers to control the blaze. However, the fire spread too quickly and damaged most of the vessel. He later jumped into the sea to escape and was taken to hospital for treatment. Initial damage was estimated at around 3-4 million baht. No tourists were injured, as passengers were transferred to another boat operated by the same company to continue their trip to Koh Thalu.

Agriculture Ministry Receives Farmers' Request to Block GMO Corn Imports from the United States

Thai corn farmers urged the government to block GMO corn imports from the United States, citing concerns over local production costs and job security, as the Agriculture Ministry pledged to review import policies with other agencies.

2h ago Khaosod

The secretary to the agriculture minister, Sarawut Nuengchumnung, along with Thongsak Songpromunduenchai, an advisor to the agriculture minister, met with the Field Crops Trade Association led by Therdsakdi Laphchitrakusol and representatives of 30 animal feed corn farmers from lower northern Thailand at the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. The farmers proposed that the government review its policy on importing genetically modified animal feed corn (GMO) from the United States, which could potentially affect product prices, production costs, and the job security of Thai farmers. The corn farming group also urged the government to accelerate assistance to farmers through price management, production input support, cultivation promotion, and relief for those impacted by the drought crisis. They additionally requested a review of agricultural standards regarding dry corn seed collection facilities without burning to align with farmers' production conditions in their areas. The agriculture ministry's secretary stated that the ministry will compile farmers' proposals and concerns to coordinate information with the Commerce Ministry and relevant agencies for consideration of balanced trade and import measures, while closely monitoring the situation to ensure fairness to producers, businesses, and consumers.

Should You Unplug Electrical Appliances During Thunder and Lightning? Panasonic Explains

Compiled by Thairath Online News Team May 20, 2025

Reporting from international media: As the rainy season arrives, people must be vigilant about lightning hazards. If lightning strikes near your home, electrical equipment inside could be damaged. The question is: should people unplug their appliances to prevent damage?

Prepare Protection Before Storms Hit

Abnormal electrical voltage or current that occurs momentarily from lightning is called "lightning surge." This electrical current can enter your home through power lines, telephone lines, or television antennas, potentially damaging electrical appliances and computers.

Panasonic states that the key preventive method is to prepare protective measures before storms occur, such as using surge-protected power strips. While these cannot prevent all damage, they significantly reduce the risk. These power strips absorb excess voltage from lightning, minimizing the chance of appliance damage.

However, Panasonic warns that once a surge-protected power strip has absorbed excess voltage, its protection system may degrade or stop working. If the status indicator light goes out, replace it immediately. Additionally, they recommend obtaining insurance that covers lightning damage, especially for expensive appliances, to prepare for unexpected incidents.

Do Not Touch Plugs or Appliances When Thunder Starts

Panasonic also warns that when thunder is heard nearby, you should not touch electrical appliances or plugs due to the risk of electrical shock. Communication devices connected with multiple cable types—such as telephones, fax machines, or internet-connected appliances—are at particularly high risk of damage. People should avoid touching power plugs, television antennas, telephone lines, wireless phone chargers, and appliance plugs during thunderstorms.

Unplug Appliances If Power Goes Out

If the power goes out, Panasonic recommends unplugging appliances from outlets. When electricity returns, many appliances may start simultaneously, causing fuses to blow or breakers to trip. High-power devices like air conditioners or microwaves should be handled first.

While many believe you "should immediately unplug appliances when thunder starts," the correct advice is: do not touch plugs during thunderstorms, and instead unplug appliances after the power goes out. With severe thunderstorms becoming increasingly frequent, preparing protective measures in advance and learning proper procedures during storms are essential to effectively reduce lightning damage.

Chusak to Consult with Political Parties on Charter Amendment Draft; Believes No Obstruction Will Occur

Pheu Thai deputy leader Chusak announced plans to consult with other political parties on a constitutional amendment draft requiring 100 parliamentary votes to submit jointly. The revised proposal would have provincial citizens select assem

2h ago Khaosod

On May 20, 2569, at parliament, Chusak Sirinit, a party-list MP and deputy leader of the Pheu Thai party, announced that a meeting of political party representatives would be held at 2:00 p.m. to gather support for submitting a constitutional amendment draft. Since no single party has enough votes to submit alone, they need one-fifth of parliament or 100 votes to jointly propose Charter Amendment 256.

Pheu Thai is proceeding with a revised version of its previously submitted draft, adjusting the number of constitutional assembly members and related procedures. According to Chusak, Pheu Thai's approach would have assembly members selected by citizens in each province, with parliament conducting the final selection process. Additionally, there would be expert members from various fields nominated by organizations and selected by parliament. Details would require consultation with other political parties, though certain sections on general provisions and the monarchy would not be amended.

When asked about the Bhumjaithai party's alternative proposal, Chusak emphasized that fairness must be maintained in the selection process. Regarding whether this signals positive momentum, Chusak said it reflects good democratic engagement. On whether the process could face obstruction, he noted that with public referendum approval from over 21.6 million voters supporting a new constitution, the process should proceed smoothly. He also pointed out that the Constitutional Court's latest ruling provided clear guidelines for drafting a new charter, so there should be no need for further court interpretation.
