A 52-year-old farmer in Trang province has successfully converted his livestock shed into a rabbit farm, raising meat rabbits and decorative rabbits to meet demand from customers throughout southern Thailand. After initial attempts at goat and guinea pig farming proved unsuccessful, farmer Nawi Chankrachang of Na Phud Subdistrict, Mueang Trang District, switched to raising New Zealand White and Angora rabbit breeds starting in 2022. These breeds are prolific, easy to raise, grow quickly, and produce attractive offspring.

The farm currently produces over 100 rabbits monthly. Meat rabbits reach market weight of 2.5 kilograms or more in 3–4 months and sell for 200–350 baht each—double the price of pork. Each doe produces 7–8 kits per pregnancy cycle, occurring roughly every 30 days. The rabbits are fed standard pellets supplemented with fresh banana leaves, grass, rice bran, and chemical-free kitchen garden vegetables, with daily exercise outside their enclosures to reduce stress.

Middlemen purchase meat rabbits weighing over 2 kilograms directly from the farm at a rate of 50–100 per month and ship them to Pattani province. Decorative rabbits are sold to customers throughout Trang and neighboring provinces for restaurants, cafés, petting zoos, and hotels, priced at 200–450 baht each. Demand for decorative rabbits now exceeds supply, requiring advance orders of several months.

The farm generates supplementary income of 15,000–18,000 baht monthly. Nawi notes that rabbit farming is an overlooked but viable profession with virtually no local competition—only he and one other breeder in Na Phud Subdistrict produce meat rabbits at scale, each supplying at least 150 per month. Currently about 30 young rabbits have recently weaned and are ready for sale, with nearly 70 more meat-breed rabbits growing. Nawi describes it as a good alternative occupation requiring minimal management and time, and regularly hosts farmers and students visiting to learn the trade.

Deputy Chair of the House Military Affairs Committee Chatchai Supattavanich presented complaints about defective bunker construction in Chanthaburi and Trat provinces on August 3, 2569 (2026) in Parliament.
