OHOS Joins Bangkok to Launch 'Home of Warm Hearts' for Homeless on Valentine's Day
On Valentine's Day, while many celebrate love and warmth, a significant number of people live on the streets without shelter. A survey reveals at least 2,499 homeless individuals in Thailand, with over half residing in Bangkok, reflecting a complex social issue rooted in economic crises, family violence, and social vulnerability. The Health Promotion Foundation (OHOS), in collaboration with Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, and partner networks, launched the 'Home of Warm Hearts', a comprehensive homeless shelter center based on the Housing First concept. This approach believes that having a home is the first step in restoring human dignity and reintegrating into society. Phornee Phu-prasert, Assistant Manager of OHOS, revealed that the initiative has been in development since 2565, aiming to provide emergency housing for homeless and vulnerable populations. The center focuses on holistic health care, mental and physical well-being, and professional skill training to help individuals prepare for social reintegration. The project goes beyond providing shelter, emphasizing a collaborative learning process that requires support from all sectors. It involves expert guidance from doctors and academics to design systematic rehabilitation programs, transforming individuals from perceived burdens to potential-filled, dignified individuals capable of independent living. Bangkok Governor Chatchart Sittipan emphasized that sustainable urban development must leave no one behind. The center offers a low-barrier, easily accessible safe space with three levels of support: an emergency 7-night red zone, a yellow zone for employed individuals, and a green zone for intensive 1-2 month professional training. The center can accommodate 200 people, with equal spaces for men and women, including LGBTQIAN+ individuals.
