Culture Minister Confirms Thai Songkran Tradition Registered with UNESCO, Addresses Cambodia's Future Nomination
On February 15, 2026 - Sabida Thaiseth, Minister of Culture, addressed the news that Cambodia proposed the 'Mohasangkran chnam thmey, the traditional Khmer New Year' to UNESCO. She confirmed that this does not impact the status of Songkran in Thailand, which was already registered as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2023. The UNESCO registration does not grant exclusive ownership, as similar traditions can exist in multiple countries. Thaiseth also mentioned that Thailand is preparing to nominate additional cultural items like Thai traditional costumes, Muay Thai, traditional checkered cloth, and Loy Krathong. The Ministry of Culture is actively working to protect Thai cultural heritage, with the Department of Cultural Promotion tasked with providing accurate information and monitoring Cambodia's registration process.
