Department of Livestock Development Reveals Cause of 72 Tigers' Deaths
On February 20, 2024 – In a follow-up to the mysterious deaths of 72 tigers at Mae Rim Sanctuary in Chiang Mai province over 12 days, veterinarians from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, in collaboration with the Department of Livestock Development and Chiang Mai University, investigated the carcasses and surrounding areas to determine the cause of death. Department of Livestock Development Director Somchuan Rattanamangkalonon revealed that all deceased tigers were infected with feline parvovirus, which rapidly impacts digestive systems and immune response. The virus caused severe symptoms including vomiting, bloody diarrhea, high fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, and high mortality rates. Additionally, mycoplasma bacterial infection was detected as a complicating factor. He acknowledged that treating wild tigers differs from domestic animals, as tigers are less accessible for immediate medical intervention. However, staff have disinfected the area and are preparing to vaccinate the remaining tigers to prevent further spread.
