Watch Out! Ombudsman Gives Election Commission 7 Days to Explain Ballot Barcode Controversy

On February 16, 2024, the Ombudsman's Office sent a letter to the Election Commission (EC) requesting an explanation after receiving complaints asking to have the Constitutional Court review whether the EC's printing of barcodes and QR codes on election ballots could potentially allow tracing back to specific voters and their chosen candidates. The complaints suggest this might violate constitutional provisions. A total of 12 complaints were filed on February 13, with three specific complaints prompting the Ombudsman's request for clarification. After receiving the EC's response, the Ombudsman's Office will review the matter and potentially refer it to the Constitutional Court if the complaint is deemed to have merit.
