9 Earthquakes in Surat Thani Province in 2 Days: What Does It Mean?
On February 12, 2024, following 9 consecutive earthquakes in Surat Thani Province between February 11-12, Professor Dr. Amorn Pimanmas, President of the Structural Engineering Association of Thailand, explained that the earthquakes were small-scale, measuring 1.9-3.2 in magnitude. These tremors were perceptible to people but did not impact building structures. Buildings are typically affected by medium-scale earthquakes measuring 4-5 or higher, depending on building strength. The earthquakes originated from the Khlong Marui Fault, which is one of 16 active fault lines in Thailand and impacts Surat Thani, Krabi, Phang Nga, and Phuket provinces. Surat Thani is classified as Zone 1 in government building regulations, considered a monitoring area with potential for seismic activity. While the probability of significant earthquakes is lower compared to other zones, continued monitoring of the Khlong Marui Fault is recommended.
