Elephant Mahout's Son Critically Injured After Breeding Accident
A male elephant named 'Phlai Phet Uthai' seriously injured its 35-year-old mahout, Somporn Sutthiso, after a breeding event. The incident occurred in Tambon Tha Muang, Butek District, Buriram Province on February 16th.
The elephant damaged two Isuzu vehicles and five highway signs during the attack. Veterinarian Suriya Kawongklang explained that the 19-year-old elephant was in mating season and became highly territorial and aggressive. The mahout stumbled while bringing food, which may have triggered the elephant's defensive response.
The veterinary team recommended close monitoring of the elephant's behavior and advised restricting access to prevent further incidents. The mahout's father denied pressuring the elephant during breeding. The injured mahout is currently unconscious in Buriram Hospital with puncture wounds and a broken leg, requiring intensive medical care.
