Dentist Reveals: Don't Rinse Immediately After Brushing Teeth - Easy Method to Strengthen Tooth Enamel
Many people have the habit of brushing their teeth immediately after eating or rinsing their mouth right after brushing, unknowingly harming their teeth. Dentist Wu Meng-hua revealed her secret to avoiding cavities for 21 years: "Don't rinse your mouth immediately after brushing." By keeping toothpaste foam in your mouth for about 10 minutes, you can strengthen tooth enamel and reduce the risk of cavities. Wu explained her "Spit and no rinse method," which involves not rinsing with water immediately after brushing with fluoride toothpaste. Instead, just spit out the foam and let the fluoride-containing foam coat the teeth for about 10 minutes, allowing maximum fluoride ion absorption. She also advised against brushing teeth immediately after eating, especially after consuming sweets. This is because bacteria in the mouth break down sugar and create acid, lowering the mouth's pH level. This causes mineral loss in tooth enamel and temporarily weakens teeth. Saliva, which is alkaline, helps restore the acid balance. If brushing after a meal is necessary, wait at least 30 minutes. Numerous scientific studies across different eras confirm that fluoride strengthens tooth enamel, promotes remineralization, and reduces cavity rates. Therefore, using fluoride toothpaste is essential for cavity prevention. Regarding mouthwash, Wu recommends using alcohol-free, fluoride-containing mouthwash with a relatively high and gentle pH level. She also addressed genetic factors in cavities, stating that while genetics play a role, post-natal care is crucial. Without proper dental hygiene - such as not using dental floss, fluoride toothpaste, frequent sugar consumption, irregular brushing, and skipping professional cleanings - the risk of cavities significantly increases.
