On February 19, 2024, the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Forward (ISOC Region 4) issued a media statement addressing online discussions about providing protective vests to religious leaders in Narathiwat province for joint missions with state officials. ISOC Region 4 clarified that this is not a general policy to outfit religious leaders, and there is no intention to transform them into operational personnel or change their spiritual leadership image. The protective vest usage is strictly limited to high-risk law enforcement situations, such as areas with potential conflicts or weapon use. The vests aim to protect religious leaders acting as 'mediators' to persuade different-minded individuals to cease illegal activities and enter the justice process. Wearing the vest remains voluntary and situationally appropriate. The command emphasized its awareness of religious leaders' valuable neutral role as community spiritual centers. During the upcoming Ramadan period, security units commit to maintaining patience, avoiding potential violence, and promoting peaceful collaboration with religious, local, and community leaders in Southern Border Provinces.
