Five Dead in Border Firefight as Military Intercepts 1.4 Million Methamphetamine Pills in Chiang Mai
On February 15, 2026, a major drug interdiction operation unfolded in Fang district, Chiang Mai, resulting in the death of five suspected drug traffickers and the seizure of 1.4 million methamphetamine pills. The operation was a joint effort by the Pha Muang Task Force and military units, conducted in the border area near Ban Nong Phai.
At approximately 2:30 PM on February 14, troops encountered a group of cross-border drug couriers, triggering a firefight lasting over five minutes. The suspects were reportedly armed with military-style weapons. Following the incident, reinforcement teams secured the area and conducted a morning sweep, discovering five deceased suspects and 14 sacks containing the drug shipment.
Maj. Gen. Sathit Waiyonnon, commander of the Pha Muang Task Force, officially announced the seizure alongside senior military, police, and administrative officials. The narcotics were subsequently handed over to Fang Police Station for further legal processing. Authorities emphasized that drug traffickers often attempt to move narcotics across borders during festival periods and urged public cooperation in reporting suspicious activities.
