Doctors Warn: Blood Collection Tubes Are Not Children's Toys - Chemical Hazards Pose Serious Health Risks
Medical professionals have raised urgent warnings about children using blood collection tubes as toys, particularly Lithium Heparin tubes with green caps. Dr. Thanin Wetchapinun, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Medical Services, stressed that medical equipment should be strictly limited to healthcare facilities. The risks include potential exposure to dangerous chemicals, infectious diseases like HIV or hepatitis, and physical hazards from tube breakage. Children are especially vulnerable to chemical exposure, which could impact their long-term development and health. Dr. Akom Chaiweerawattana from the National Institute of Child Health explained that these tubes are coated with Lithium Heparin to prevent blood clotting and are used for clinical chemical tests. Even seemingly empty tubes can contain chemicals that can enter the body if placed in the mouth. Parents are strongly advised to monitor children's toys, avoid medical equipment modifications, and educate children about the dangers of playing with unfamiliar objects.
