Drone Rescue Operation Launched to Save Injured Dugong Near Koh Libong
TRANG — On February 17, 2026, authorities initiated a drone-assisted rescue mission to save a dugong found entangled in fishing gear near Koh Libong, with severe wounds at the base of both flippers. The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR), working through its Lower Andaman Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre, collaborated with the Marine National Park Research and Study Centre 3 (Trang) to track and assist the injured marine mammal. Initial drone surveys on February 14 over Laem Ju Hoi and Hat Toob revealed eight dugongs, with one showing significant rope injuries. Despite deep, swollen wounds around its flippers, the dugong maintained its ability to swim, dive, and feed normally, with a body condition score of 3 out of 5. Followup aerial observations located the injured dugong east of Koh Libong, swimming with 12 other dugongs. The rope remains tightly wrapped around its flippers, with visible knots extending towards its rear. Officials are now coordinating with local agencies and the Koh Libong community network to develop a strategy for safely removing the rope while minimizing stress to the animal. The dugong shows heightened caution, retreating to deeper channels when boats approach within 150 meters.
