Fisheries Department Showcases Tilapia's Economic Potential Reaching Nearly 14 Billion Baht Annually
The Fisheries Department is showcasing tilapia's potential, transforming from a royal gift to a popular freshwater fish that creates food, careers, and income, driving the economy with a value of nearly 14 billion baht per year. Thitiporn Lawprasert, the Department's Director-General, revealed that the department is preparing to host the '60 Years of Royal Tilapia for the Thai People' event from March 13-17, 2026, at Future Park and Spell shopping centers in Pathum Thani. This event aims to continue the royal legacy of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who gifted tilapia to develop aquaculture as a foundation for food security and sustainable economic development. Over the past 60 years, the department has supported research to develop and improve tilapia breeds, helping farmers access high-quality fish with high production and survival rates. Current statistics show Thailand has 339,489 tilapia farms producing 273,169 tons, with an economic value of 13,612 million baht. Domestic consumption accounts for 98% of production, with only 2% exported, totaling 4,844.7 tons valued at 301.2 million baht in 2025. Primary export markets include the United States, Italy, United Arab Emirates, and Taiwan.
