Mystery: How Did 72 Tigers Die from Feline Distemper in a Closed System?
On February 21, 2024, 72 tigers from Mae Rim and Mae Taeng wildlife reserves in Chiang Mai died mysteriously within 12 days. The Department of Livestock Development confirmed that the tigers were infected with feline parvovirus. Sources report that both wildlife reserves are closed systems that received poultry feed, leading to the sudden illness and death of the tigers. The reserves are located over 30 kilometers apart, making the simultaneous outbreak even more suspicious. Medical staff who investigated the incident were found to have only common colds. The tiger deaths were distributed across two reserves: 21 tigers at Mae Rim reserve and 51 tigers at Mae Taeng reserve.
