Doctors Reveal: 90% of Men Have HPV Without Knowing, Recommend Vaccination for All Genders
Dr. Prayongsri Khamprapun from Thanakancha Hospital explained that HPV virus is often associated with cervical cancer, leading many to believe the vaccine is only for women. In reality, men have equally high chances of contracting HPV and often remain unaware of infection.
The doctor noted that in recent years, more men are seeking HPV vaccine consultations, reflecting a growing awareness of preventive healthcare. Approximately 90% of sexually active men have been exposed to HPV at some point in their lives, with their immune systems less effective at combating the virus, which can remain dormant for over 10 years.
HPV can be transmitted through all sexual contact, regardless of gender. Many countries now recommend gender-neutral vaccination, emphasizing that prevention is a shared responsibility. In men, HPV is linked to various cancers, including oral and throat cancers (5 times more common in men), anal cancer, penile cancer, and genital warts.
Dr. Prayongsri emphasized that while many men believe they don't need vaccination due to lack of symptoms, the virus can silently spread to loved ones. The increasing male awareness about preventive healthcare, including HPV vaccination, represents a positive shift in health consciousness.
