Court Sentences Man to Life in Prison for Attempting to Assassinate Trump
According to BBC reporting on February 5th, a U.S. district court sentenced Ryan Routh to life in prison for attempting to assassinate Donald Trump while he was a presidential candidate at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Secret Service agents spotted the rifle barrel and attempted to counterfire, causing Routh to flee but he was quickly arrested near the incident site. Judge Aireen Cannon stated that Routh's crime undoubtedly deserves a life sentence, while his attorney Martin Ross announced plans to appeal. During the trial, Routh displayed unusual behavior, including challenging Trump's golf game and referencing Adolf Hitler and Vladimir Putin. After being found guilty, Routh attempted to stab himself with a pen but was stopped by police. Prosecutors requested life imprisonment without parole, citing Routh's lack of remorse, while his defense requested a 27-year sentence, noting his age of 60.
