Department of Corrections Discovers Prisoner Suspected of Monkeypox at Thonburi Special Prison
On February 14, 2024, the Department of Corrections announced that a prisoner at Thonburi Special Prison was showing potential monkeypox symptoms. The prisoner, who was admitted on January 20, developed high fever and tissue necrosis in the foot area, leading to transfer to the Corrections Hospital for treatment. Medical staff noticed clear blisters and other symptoms consistent with monkeypox, triggering an immediate infection control response. The prison implemented a 'Bubble and Seal' strategy, including quarantining new prisoners, screening for symptoms like fever, sore throat, headache, and muscle pain. Currently, no additional prisoners have been found to have direct relationships with the suspected monkeypox case. Corrections officials are closely coordinating with the Ministry of Public Health and disease control agencies to monitor and prevent potential spread.
