ISIS-Linked Extremists Kill at Least 162 in Brutal Village Attacks in Nigeria

A lawmaker from Kwara State in western Nigeria reported that armed extremists killed at least 162 people during attacks on the villages of Woro and Nugu on Tuesday evening. The attacks are believed to be carried out by the Lakunra group, which has connections to ISIS, though no group has claimed responsibility. Graphic images from the scene show numerous bodies lying in blood, with some victims having their hands tied, and widespread burning of homes. Amnesty International stated that the gunmen killed over 170 people, burned houses, and looted stores. The Kwara State governor described the attack as a 'cowardly expression of terrorist frustration' in response to ongoing military operations. Nigeria is currently facing complex security challenges, including insurgencies by Muslim extremist groups in the northeast and increasing kidnapping incidents in the northwest and north-central regions.
