HFSI Reports 11% Reduction in Road Fatalities for 2025, Signals Positive Progress
On February 16, 2026, Deputy Prime Minister Sophon Saram, as chairman of the Health Promotion Foundation (HFSI), presided over a committee meeting where key road safety data was reviewed. Overall road accident deaths dropped from 17,477 in 2024 to 15,534 in 2025, representing an 11% reduction. The highest-risk group remains youth aged 15-24, with 81.1% of motorcycle fatalities involving those not wearing helmets, mostly occurring within 5 kilometers of home.
Sophon emphasized the need to build preventive immunity against accidents, gambling, and drugs starting from childhood, particularly in rural areas. He recommended integrating comprehensive learning modules into Thai educational systems and suggested using artificial intelligence to scan and analyze risky behaviors.
Dr. Phongthep Wongwatcharapaiboon, HFSI's manager, outlined five key road safety measures for 2026, including promoting helmet use, implementing AI-assisted law enforcement, developing speed control policies, enhancing student transportation safety, and creating road safety awareness programs for children.
