Cyclone Gezani Devastates Madagascar, Death Toll Rises to 31
On February 12, Associated Press reported a disaster situation in Madagascar after Cyclone Gezani hit the eastern port city of Toamasina. The death toll has risen to at least 31, mostly from building collapses, with 36 injured and 4 people still missing. Over 6,000 residents have been evacuated to temporary shelters. Meteorological agencies issued maximum red-level warnings across several regions, highlighting risks of flooding and landslides. Madagascar, frequently vulnerable to Indian Ocean storms, had experienced another severe cyclone less than two weeks prior. The Madagascar Meteorological Office noted that Cyclone Gezani passed north of Antananarivo and has since weakened to a tropical storm while moving westward.
