Gunman Shoots Police, Confesses He Didn't Want to be Jailed for Third Time
The gunman confessed, 'I didn't want to be jailed for a third time because I had both drugs and weapons, so I decided to shoot at the police.' He was taken to reenact the crime scene. The incident involved a criminal shooting at Police Corporal Apiwat Mala, 27, a patrol officer from San Kamphaeng Police Station in Chiang Mai, while he was attempting to conduct a search, after which the suspect fled. The court issued an arrest warrant for Wipak Wongwan, 36, and police began pursuit. Border military officials later reported that Myanmar authorities had apprehended Wipak and transferred him to Thai military personnel. On February 10, Police Major General Kritthaphol Yisakorn, Region 5 Police Commander, interrogated the suspect and then transferred him to San Kamphaeng Police Station for further investigation. During his arrest, a black backpack was found containing 376 methamphetamine pills. The suspect was charged with illegal possession of Category 1 narcotics and handed over to investigators for legal proceedings.
