Warning Issued as Wild Elephants Frequently Cross Highway in Nam Nao National Park
PHETCHABUN — On February 17, 2026, the head of Nam Nao National Park warned motorists to exercise extreme caution due to frequent wild elephant crossings along the highway.
Somkiat Katib, the park's chief, reported that elephants have been regularly foraging and crossing the Lom Sak–Chum Phae road at kilometre marker 409, near a helicopter landing area within the park.
The herds are most commonly encountered in the afternoon and evening during their feeding periods, with lone animals like elephants and deer more frequently seen crossing the road at night. Park authorities provided specific safety guidelines for drivers, emphasizing the need to stop at a safe distance, keep hazard lights on, and avoid actions that might startle the animals.
Drivers were strictly advised not to use high-beam headlights, honk horns, rev engines, or make loud noises when elephants are present. Officials stressed that careless driving could potentially endanger both wildlife and motorists.
