Investigating Salween and Pai Rivers for Potential Toxic Contamination Concerns
Officials conducted a detailed water quality investigation on February 10, 2024, focusing on 6 critical points along the Salween and Pai Rivers. The team from the Environmental Office and Pollution Control, in collaboration with local environmental agencies, collected water and sediment samples from key river branches including the Salween River, Yom River, Mae Po River, and Mae Kong Ka River. This is the second follow-up investigation after an initial arsenic screening in October 2023, aimed at closely monitoring potential environmental changes. The collected samples will be sent to the Pollution Control Department's laboratory for precise analysis, with particular concern about fish in the Pai River that are caught and consumed by local residents during the early rainy season.
