Massive Wildfire Ravages Over 3,000 Rai at Sakaerat Environmental Research Station
NAKHON RATCHASIMA — On February 13, 2026, a fast-moving wildfire scorched more than 3,000 rai (4.8 sq km) of forest at the Sakaerat Environmental Research Station in Wang Nam Khiao district, with officials working urgently to contain the blaze along firebreak lines.
The fire erupted around 8:40 PM on February 12 in the Ban Wang Nam Khiao area, quickly spreading towards Ban Ba Dan village. Station officials coordinated with firefighters and water trucks from local administrative organizations to combat the flames.
Dry, hot weather and accumulated fallen leaves fueled the rapid fire spread. According to Mr. Surachit Waengsothorn, the research station's director, approximately 80% of the dry dipterocarp forest has been burned, but the fire-resistant trees have not sustained significant damage.
Interestingly, Waengsothorn explained that seasonal fires are a natural part of the ecosystem, and preventing fires for consecutive years could fundamentally alter the forest's composition and threaten local wildlife.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, using fire engines and water sprays along firebreaks to prevent the flames from reaching nearby communities. While the fire remains active, its intensity has decreased, and containment efforts are ongoing.
