No Holds Barred – Election Tensions Rise as Scrutiny Intensifies
Although unofficial election results show Bhumjaithai Party securing a leading number of MPs and beginning to invite other political parties to discuss cabinet formation, the official election certification by the Election Commission (EC) will likely be delayed. Currently, various organizations and individuals are filing complaints through multiple channels, claiming the election is riddled with suspicious and potentially illegal activities. Of particular interest is the complaint filed with the Office of the Ombudsman regarding barcodes and QR codes on election ballots that could potentially trace voting rights, which may be unconstitutional. The Ombudsman's Office has recently instructed the EC to provide clarification within 7 days – a period that the entire society will be watching intently. If the EC provides an explanation, the Ombudsman will process the matter and present it to their meeting. Should the meeting determine the complaint has constitutional merit, the case will be forwarded to the Constitutional Court. A network of students from 9 institutions, led by the Thammasat and Assembly Group, has also filed a lawsuit with the Central Administrative Court, focusing on election ballots with barcodes as a violation of the constitutional principle of 'secret voting'. They are requesting the court mandate a new election. Police Major General Thavee Sodsong, leader of the Pracharath Party, has also emerged, invoking his past role as Justice Minister to pursue electoral justice. He posted on Facebook emphasizing that any action compromising voting secrecy undermines democracy and the rule of law.
