Small Friend - Korat Accelerates Breeding of Rare Silver-Blue Thai Cat, One of Five National Signature Breeds
To conserve and promote Thai cat breeds, stimulate new economic opportunities, and boost tourism, the Cabinet approved designating five Thai cat breeds as national cultural icons on November 18, 2025. These include Suphalak, Korat, Wichien Maat, Konja, and Khao Manee cats. The Korat cat, also known as the silver-blue cat, is an ancient Thai breed originating from Phimai District in Nakhon Ratchasima Province. It is renowned for its distinctive silver-gray coat, green-emerald eyes, and is considered a symbol of abundance and good fortune. Currently, efforts are underway to preserve and expand its population due to dwindling numbers. Porn Thep Chusakthanadech, 65, president of the Phimai Korat Cat Conservation Club, revealed that the Korat cat population is declining. His group currently manages around 60 cats and is committed to increasing their numbers following the national recognition, ensuring these cats remain a symbol of Korat and Thai national identity.
