Thevrit Submits Motion to Delay Appointment of 2 Election Commissioners, Seeks Supreme Court Ruling on Election Validity
On February 18, 2024, at the Parliament, Senator Thevrit Maneechai announced a motion requesting the Senate to delay approving two additional Election Commission (EC) candidates on February 26. He expressed concerns about potential conflicts of interest, noting that many senators currently under investigation should not be approving members of an organization that might investigate them. Thevrit argued that with over half of the senators facing legal proceedings, the current approval process raises serious credibility issues. He suggested pausing the appointment of two more EC commissioners until there is clarity about the current EC's case investigations. Senator Nanthana Nantavarobhas also supported the motion, highlighting that 138 senators are under investigation and should not be approving key independent organization positions. She is working to gather 20 senators to petition the Constitutional Court to potentially declare the recent election invalid.
