Panic at Checkpoint: Drug Truck Carrying 5.3 Million Meth Pills Crashes, Driver Flees Leaving ID Behind
At 1:00 AM on February 9th, military personnel from the 3rd Cavalry Regiment and special task forces set up a mobile checkpoint to intercept drug smuggling near the Thailand-Myanmar border in Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province. During the operation, they spotted a suspicious black Mitsubishi Pajero with Bangkok license plates. When the vehicle approached within 500 meters of the checkpoint, it suddenly reversed and crashed on the roadside, with the driver immediately opening the door and fleeing into the darkness. A search of the vehicle revealed 24 sacks wrapped in black plastic, containing 4,720,000 methamphetamine pills and a 29-year-old driver's ID from Sikhio District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Later the same day, officers found two travel bags hidden in the grass containing an additional 620,000 pills. The total seized methamphetamine amount was 5,340,000 pills, which were handed over to Mae Sai police for further legal proceedings.
