Thailand Calls for Cleaner Chinese New Year Celebrations to Reduce Air Pollution
BANGKOK — On February 16, 2026, Thailand's Pollution Control Department urged the public to celebrate Chinese New Year with reduced smoke and greater health consciousness. Director-general Surin Wongkitthamrong warned that traditional practices like burning incense, firecrackers, and joss paper could significantly worsen fine dust pollution during the festival. The department highlighted that these practices generate harmful PM2.5 particles and carcinogenic substances, posing particular risks to vulnerable groups such as children and elderly individuals with respiratory conditions. Weather conditions are expected to limit air circulation, potentially trapping pollutants near the ground. Under the campaign 'Reduce Pollution, Increase Good Fortune', the department recommended alternatives like using shorter incense sticks, electric incense, or conducting rituals in well-ventilated areas. Surin emphasized that modifying celebration practices can protect personal and public health while minimizing environmental impact.
