Green Bridge Gets a Major Makeover for Easy Walking and Cycling in Bangkok
Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is accelerating improvements to the 'Green Bridge' in the Sarasin Intersection-Ratchadaphisek Road area, which is a crucial path connecting two major central city public parks: Lumpini and Benjakitti Parks. The goal is to provide Bangkok residents with a more convenient and safe exercise and relaxation space. The Green Bridge has undergone several transformations, including creating elevated ramps for wheelchairs, baby strollers, and bicycles to improve mobility and address the previous bridge's high stairs, following Universal Design principles. The bicycle path uses a Sport Surface material with vibrant colors including red, yellow, purple, and blue, while maintaining the bridge's signature green identity to enhance both aesthetics and functionality. Walking areas have been updated with comfortable granite surfaces. The 1.6-kilometer walking and cycling path improvement project is approximately 45% complete as of December 1, 2024. BMA is pushing forward with remaining work, including elevated walkway structures near the expressway, gardening, electrical systems, and drainage. The project is expected to be fully completed by May 2024. At the Lumpini Park entrance on Sarasin Road, BMA has completed a bicycle and stroller elevator. Landscape improvements, radio station building renovations, and underground connections are over 38% complete. BMA plans to gradually open these areas to make Lumpini Park more accessible. Currently, the connection between Lumpini and Benjakitti Parks has become more accessible for walking and cycling. BMA considers this a gift to Bangkok residents, aiming to support a sustainable, healthy lifestyle for everyone.
